Why Field's wax is never factory-applied

Most waxed cotton is treated once, at the factory, and left to wear down from there. Field's cotton is re-treated by hand every two production runs.

This isn't a marketing distinction. A factory-sealed coating looks identical to a hand-maintained one on day one. The difference shows up in year four, when one has gone dry and patchy and the other hasn't.

It costs more to do it this way, and slows down how much we can produce at once. We've decided that's the right trade for a coat meant to outlast a decade of actual travel, not just look like it could.
